Common questions about safety clothing and equipment

What PPE do I need on a construction site?

The minimum PPE on most UK sites includes a hard hat, steel toe cap safety boots, hi-vis vest or jacket, and safety glasses. Depending on the task you may also need ear defenders, dust masks, safety gloves and knee pads.

What is the difference between S1, S2 and S3 safety boots?

S1 boots have steel toe caps and antistatic properties. S2 adds water resistance to the upper. S3 adds a penetration-resistant midsole — required where you might step on nails or sharp objects. For most trade and construction work, S3 is the recommended minimum.

What hi-vis class do I need?

Class 1 is suitable for low-risk environments. Class 2 is standard for most construction and roadside work. Class 3 is required near fast-moving traffic. For most site work, Class 2 hi-vis is the minimum requirement.

Do I need a dust mask or a respirator?

An FFP2 mask is adequate for general wood or drywall dust. For silica dust from cutting concrete or stone, an FFP3 mask or half-face respirator is required under COSHH regulations. Always check the COSHH data sheet for the material you're working with.

Workwear & PPE — buying guide & best UK prices

Choosing the right PPE isn't just about compliance — it's about staying safe on site every day. At 1sttools.co.uk we compare prices on workwear and PPE from the UK's leading retailers so you get the best deal without visiting every site.

Safety footwear is the first priority for most trades. Look for safety boots with a steel or composite toe cap (EN ISO 20345 S1P or S3 rating covers most site requirements). Composite toe caps are lighter and won't set off metal detectors — worth considering if you work in secure environments.

Hi-vis and body protectionhi-vis vests and jackets should meet EN ISO 20471. Class 2 is sufficient for most roadside work; Class 3 is required for higher-risk environments. Pair with work trousers and knee pads if you're doing any groundwork or flooring.

Respiratory and eye protection — FFP2 and FFP3 dust masks are essential for cutting, grinding or sanding. Add safety glasses or a face shield for any work with flying debris. Ear defenders rated to at least 25dB SNR are recommended for prolonged use of power tools.
